Lot's Happening at the Museum,Summer of 2020

There are so many things gong on at the Museum this summer...

Things are a bit different this season with the Covid-19 Pandemic affecting everywhere. We have delayed opening our doors to the public officially until July 5th. We will run normal hours here at the museum until after Labor Day. A lot of work has been done to prepare the museum for a public opening. Luckily this virus does not live on surfaces for more than a few days, so the museum has been thoroughly cleaned and is ready for the public when we do open.

  • We have contractors working on the back of the main building. They have installed two sump pumps and drains for the spring water that seems to continue to be a problem for this old building. They will be removing plaster and sealing the exposed bricks to the weather with a clear sealant.
  • We are taking bids on a mural of Alexander: Old and New, to go on the top of the North Wall of the main building. Also, we will be replacing the deck outside of the James Gang Java Coffee and Gift Shop, adding a raised garden and new paint to the Boy Scout building. The process of adding a sky light to the Novak Building will begin soon adding additional light to the building which will allow guests to see more of the exhibits inside. These are all large projects that will take time to finish but we hope to have them completed by the end of this season.
  • Cameron Walstrom from the NDSU Extension office in Williston along with Christi and Meridith planted 11 different crops in plots that are 5 feet by wide by 30 feet long with a 5 foot walkway between them behind the main building. We are excited to see what will grow in the area the old gym used to be.  The crops include; Barley, Chick Peas, Durum Wheat, Flax, Hard Red Spring Wheat, Hemp, Lentils, Oats, Peas, Safflower and Soybeans.

  • New Hall of Fame Family Boxes are coming. We are excited to announce that we will have new boxes available for purchase at the end of this season and throughout the fall.  If you or any member of your family is interested in purchasing a box to display memorabilia from your families history, please inquire at the museum.

  • We are very excited about working with the Junior High and Student Council students from Alexander High School and their History teacher Mrs. Severson to update our War Memorial display this fall. There are several ideas that Mrs. Severson has that the kids will be working on in class. We are thrilled to have the school working with the museum to update this display and look forward to it being ready for next season. We will keep you updated on the progress throughout  the year.

If you have the opportunity to come visit we would love to have you stop by. Enjoy your summer!

Have you seen our replication of a traditional Country Store?

The amazing collection of artifacts in the Country Store allows
visitors to see what life in the early days was like.
All of the exhibits in our replication of a country store have
been loaned or donated to the museum by
residents from the McKenzie County, North Dakota area.

Stop by and look at our extensive collection of memorabilia and
determine whether you would have been able to survive without all
of the modern conveniences we so often take for granted.
It is an eye opener!

Honoring Our Elders And Preserving Our Past

The original Alexander school building.

This building was built in 1914 and was used as the school until 1967.
After the school moved to its new location just east of the park here in Alexander a
committee was formed to determine what to do with the old building.
It was determined that the building should be preserved and turned into a museum.
In 1969 the Lewis and Clark Trail Museum was created.
With the support of local McKenzie county residents and settler's from the original settlement
of the community of Alexander, the museum was able to open it's doors on June 29th 1969.
The items you see in the museum have all been donated or loaned to the museum by surrounding
communities and families that want these items to be preserved.
We invite you in to see the amazing artifacts that are on display in our many buildings.
